What is an Internet Service Provider?

ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a company or entity that provides Internet connection services and other related services to customers. Initially ISPs were synonymous with telephone networks, because ISPs used to sell connections or access the internet through the telephone network.

One of the supervisors of Internet service Provider is IndiHome from Telkom, which provides services such as connection to the Internet, domain name registration, and hosting.

The type of service from an ISP can usually be categorized into 2 parts:

1. Dial on demand Internet

Dial on demand is an internet service where customers are not continuously connected to the internet. Customers will be charged fees based on the length of time they are connected to the internet.

Example: dial on demand internet services are: Telkomnet instant from Telkom, dial up services from other ISPs, as well as some services from local wireless ISPs.

2. Dedicated Internet

Customers who use dedicated internet will continue to be connected to the internet 24/7. The payment system of this service is also usually done monthly where the customer will pay according to the package offered, whether during the month the user is indeed using the internet 24 hours a day or not.

This dedicated system is usually expensive, and usually to reduce subscription fees, ISPs provide several methods to reduce prices, for example by limiting the amount of data that can be downloaded and uploaded by customers for 1 month. This amount of data is usually called a quota.

Example: dedicated internet internet services are services from Channel 11, ERA ACCESS, Speedy from Telkom and services from local wireless ISPs.

The following is an example from an ISP

Here are some examples of ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in Indonesia, which can be read below:

  • PT. Indonesian Telecommunications
  • PT. Indosat / INDOSATnet.
  • Asia Pacific Internet Company.
  • PT. EXCELCOMINDO PRATAMA.

Meanwhile the most common connection media used by ISPs are to use:

1. Wire

Cable. Telephone cables, coaxial cables, fiber optic cables, power cables, UTP cables, just cables.

2. Wireless

Using a wireless network (WiFi). The cable is still used, but most connection lines use frequency. Usually use the freed frequency of use in a country. In Indonesia the frequency that is free to use is the 2.4 GHz frequency. So from customers will use a wireless radio with a frequency of 2.4 GHz to connect with their ISP.

Internet Service Provider ISP has a network both domestically and internationally so that customers or consumers of the connection provided by the ISP can connect or connect to the global Internet network.

Network here is a transmission media that can stream data that can be in the form of cables (cable rental, modem & broadband), radio or VSAT. Usually, an ISP (Internet Service Provider) is a monthly fee to consumers / users. The relationship is usually divided into 2 (two) categories, namely modem (Dial up) and also broadband.
